At Most Terrific Child Center we provide a developmentally appropriate experience for the children. We recognize that the interests of the children play a vital role in the development of an effective curriculum. We also acknowledge that the social, emotional, intellectual, and physical development of the children are equally important and are a critical component of a successful early childhood program. The recognition of the children’s developmental stages, the children’s interest, and developmentally appropriate practices are the foundation of what happens at the Center on a daily basis. We strive to provide a rich learning environment reflective of these components.
The environment is an integral part of the curriculum. We create a nurturing, learning environment with the full intention that children will make their own choices within the framework provided. The center is organized into activity centers reflective of the children’s interests and developmental needs. We offer children the opportunity to make choices for themselves initiating their own leaning. The role of the teachers is to clarify the choices available to children, give them guidance in choosing when necessary, and to facilitate children’s accomplishments. While some of the activities available to the children are teacher initiated, all of these are elective for the children.
Since the curriculum is child-centered, starting with what interests the children and expanded through teacher-directed activities, the adults facilitate learning by discussing with the children what they see, hear, smell, taste, feel, and think helping them increase their understanding of the world around them.
Most Terrific Child Center values and respects cultural diversity. This belief is modeled for the children and parents through our own words and actions. Our curriculum draws upon many cultures in as many ways as possible – through books and stories, songs and dances, and different cultural celebrations which may include special foods, music and art. We invite our families to share their special traditions with us.
